This is the West Gate of the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. Gates, or Gopurams like these, in the exact shape and form are constructed on all four directions to mark the entry to the temple campus. While most South Indian temple and particularly those in Tamil Nadu have a similar structure and design for the Gopuram, what stands out for the ones at the Meenakshi Temple are their astounding heights. |

Chariot Temple | Hampi
The Temple in the form of a Chariot has become one of the iconic landmarks of South India and is almost used as a representative image for the architecture of the glorious Vijayanagara Empire, and is also printed on the currency notes of India! It’s located in the premises of the Vitthala Temple in Hampi, which along with numerous other monuments and temples in Hampi are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from 1336 to 1566 AD and hence most of the monuments in Hampi including the Chariot Temple are about 700 years old.
